Differences Between CD and DVD Media

Even though both CD and DVD disks have the same media size and shape, the things they have in common ends there. There are many different things between the two, such as what they hold and how much they hold.

Data pits and lasers

A disc has microscopic grooves that will move along in a spiral around the disc. CDs and DVDs both have these grooves, with laser breams applied to scan these very grooves.

As you may know, digital information is represented in ones and zeroes. Inside of these discs, very tiny reflective bumps known as lands and non reflective holes known as pits, which can be found beside the grooves, reflect both the ones and the zeroes of digital information.

By reducing the wave length of the laser to 625mm or more infrared light, DVD technology has managed to write in smaller pits when compared to the standard technology of CD. This will allow for a greater amount of data per track on the DVD. The minimum length allowed for a pit in a single layer DVD-R is .4 micron, which is obviously more than the .0834 micron that a CD offers.

The tracks of a DVD are narrower as well, which allows for more tracks per disc, which also translates into more capacity than a CD. The average single layer DVD holds 4.5 GB of data, while a CD holds a mere 700 MB.

Layers

As stated above, a DVD has smaller pits and the lasers need to focus on them. This is actually achieved by using a thinner plastic substrate than in a CD, which means that the laser needs to pass through a thinner layer, with less depth to reach the pits. It's this reduction in thickness that's responsible for the discs that were only 0.6mm thickness - which is half that of a CD.

Data access speed

DVDs will access data at a much faster rate than a CD can. The average 32X CD-ROM drive reads data at 4MB a second, while a 1X DVD drive reads at 1.38MB a second. This is even faster than an 8X CD drive.

Universal data format

The recording formats of CDs and DVDs are quite different, as DVDs use UDF, or the Universal Data Format. This format allows data, video, audio, or even a combination of all three to be stored in a single file structure. The advantage to this is any file can be accessed by any drive, computer, or even consumer video. CDs on the other hand aren't compatible with this format.

CD Terminology

Block Error Rate. This is the raw digital error rate before any type of error correction.

CD

This the Compact Disc, a digital medium that's formedof a 12cm polycarbonate substrate, a reflective metalized layer, and a protective lacquer coating.

CD-R

Compact Disc-Recordable. The term CD-R is used to describe the technology of recordable CD along with the equipment, software, and media that are used to make the recordable disks.

Data layer

With CD-R media, this is the organic dye that is sandwiched between the polycarbonate substrate and the metalized reflective layer of the media. CD-R disks don't have any data on them at all until the are recorded.

Injection Molding

This is a manufacturing method where the molten material is forced into a mold, normally under high pressure, then cooled so that the material will take on the shape of a mirror image in the mold.

Media or blanks

CD-R media are the disks that are used to record digital information using a special recorder and pre-mastering software with a computer. These discs are made of a polycarbonate substrate, a layer of organic dye, a metalized reflective layer, and a
coating of lacquer for protection.

Organic dye

The data layer of CD-R media is made from a dye that is melted during the process of recording. Where the dye is melted, becomes opaque or refractive, scattering the reading laser so that it isn't reflected back into the reading sensors.

Reflective layer

This is the metal later that sits on top of the dye that reflects the laser beam back to the reading assembly. This is normally 24k gold in CD-R disks, although it can be silver as well.

By putting in detail the things one has done in that position and experiences learned from it, that information is already basis for the employer to see the potential the applicant has for that position. It shows the qualities one possesses and the benefits one can contribute to the further growth of the company.

After that, the resume should show one’s educational background. Some companies prefer someone with a degree in a certain field, a licensed professional to do the job or one who possesses a master’s degree. By showing one’s credentials, it is a good indicator of the type of training one has possessed in school and the accomplishments one has achieved in the course of one’s career.

The latter section should provide details such as hobbies, interests and character references. Employers look at potential applicants who not only have the qualifications for the job but also those who also those who are well rounded. Being active in a certain organization and be seen as a leader in a group shows one’s social skills with others. Character references do the same and give people an idea how one performed working with that person.

There is no ideal resume. It depends on the job. It is an important step one must pass before being called for that first interview.

Cause we've ended as lovers by Jeff Beck was voted number 99 out of the 100 best guitar solos of all time by guitar world magazine.

This song, dedicated to guitarist Roy Buchanan, was composed by longtime friend Stevie Wonder as an apology to Jeff for releasing "Superstition" first. This is what Beck is referring to in the liner notes on the back of the album when he says, "thanks to Stevie."

5 Strategies To Apply When Offshore Telemarketers Call

Telemarketers from call centres in developing nations - we all get them! It's all a matter of how you tell them to leave you alone! Here are some of my strategies.

1. When they ask how you are carry on like an old person with a visitor about all of your problems.

I say something like this....

My back has been sore for weeks so I went to the chiropractor this afternoon and he told me to come back in a month. So, I said to him "I can't make it then, can we postpone it for a week?" And then I went home and we were out of teabags so I had to go to the shop and get some more. But not the old type, but the new lipton triangular ones bla bla bla.

You get the picture!

Don't hang up! Stay on the line and do whatever it takes to bore the hell out of them!

2. When they try to close the sale by asking if you want something for free, lead them on as though you are interested.

I say something like this....

"Just hang on a second mate. I will just go and grab a pen and paper. This sounds so incredible and I want to make sure I don't miss out on anything ok?"

Return 5 minutes later and say "Just looking mate, hold on".

Important:

You can amuse yourself by seeing how much of their time you can waste before they hang up!

Remember:

They will do the same to you when you call for customer service. So this step is the appropriate angle to take.

3. Start to yell frantically into the phone in the best Spanish you can fake.

4. In similarity to the looking for the pen scenario.

I wind them up by asking them something like this.....

"Can you hold? I have something on the stove."

I then go and have a cup of Earl Grey and read the paper. Again, 5 minutes later I go and check the phone and quietly giggle at them waiting and calling out "Hello, are you there?"

Important:

This is the time to pick up the phone once again and allow them to start their introduction. Allow them to put in a good effort and then ask them to hold again. This time someone is at the door. Again, leave them to wait another couple of minutes!

Next just simply return and repeat this process again.

If you're good you can keep this up for some time depending on their enthusiasm and/or naivety.

5. You can now begin to enjoy their calls, have a laugh and even start looking forward to them!

When in a more cheeky and active mood I tend to constantly interupt their pitch and rave on about the high quality of New Zealand products and services. Take it further by criticising their suboardinate roll in marketing logistics.

Remember:

Ocassional gramatical and elocution lessons regarding their misuse of English goes a long way.

To conclude:

This sort of activity can attract mixed responses! But hey, it's harmless and all in the name of good fun.

Best Guitar Solos - #100 Jane's Addiction: 3 Days

Three Days is a ten minute, forty-six second song featured on Jane's Addiction's 1990 album, Ritual de lo Habitual. It is a three-part song that meditates on death and rebirth. The guitar solo by Dave Navarro was ranked as number 100 in Guitar World's "100 best guitar solos".

The song was inspired by Xiola Blue, who came to Los Angeles for her father's funeral, and spent three days with Farrell and his girlfriend Casey Niccoli, spending their time together in a "haze of sex and drugs". Blue died of a heroin overdose in New York City in June, 1987. The song was written prior to her death.
